Project portfolios typically serve to maximize the value of a
core technology or competence and to diversify the risk individual
development projects. However, due to funding restrictions, many
companies are forced to cut down their burn rates and become
one-project companies.
During such transitions, all focus is directed towards the lead
project and little attention is paid to the rest of the project
portfolio or the company's proprietary technology platform.
Eventually, these assets are written off.
At Wiborg, we acknowledge that companies may need to focus
entirely on the lead project and we therefore offer to take
responsibility for managing the remaining assets in the best
possible way. Some may warrant an attempt to out-license them while
others are best put on hold or terminated.
A clear portfolio management strategy may for example uncover
that selected patent families are no longer required or
valuable.
